The Asheville Area Arts Council has a small, conventional gallery downtown with a large unused basement below street level.
I did nothing to the fabric of these basement rooms, but did construct a large stretched canvas (9 x 18 feet) to close off one area and display the reflected light work.
The exposed ductwork of the space echoes the openness of my own installations in that the mechanisms are not mysterious nor hidden. What remains is the surprise that something so mundane and obvious can be more than the sum of its parts.
In total there are 12 artworks in the basement area, including the images shown and a DVD loop, a ''gravitygram'' on the floor, and several paintings of different sizes.
Exhibition ran through January 3rd 2010, at the AAAC, 11 Biltmore Avenue, Asheville, NC 28801
